Focus on Housing
Affordable housing development
Through partnerships with local affordable housing developers, AIIU develops single family homes -- new and rehabilitated -- in the 7-county Twin Cities metro area with small loan gap financing.
We hope to have three to six existing home and loans completed by end of 2007, with additional homes completed by 2008.
Our goal for the future is to develop a mixed-use rental and commercial property in Saint Paul for American Indians housing. A predevelopment plan is in progress. Watch for updates on the progress of this project.
Homeownership and Financial Literacy Training
We currently offer a Home Ownership Training course in the Spring and again in the Fall to introduce families to homeownership and related financial issues. Our goal in community outreach and marketing is to help people start thinking about future homeownership and the issues involved.
Financial Literacy courses are available as a seminar offered fall, winter and spring, or one-on-one with a counselor to give clients that extra incentive to move forward in solid financial practices. Informational resources are available as well.
Community Networking
Throughout our activities, we strive to develop a network between the American Indian community and funders, developers and bankers who are unfamiliar with our community's cultural needs and values.
Community Unity
American Indians in Unity is available to support local school initiatives, promote American Indian culture and celebrations such as community feasts, parades, Native American History Day activities, American Indian Month activities and powwows.
Our staff is also available to speak and present at housing summits, and serve on local advisory committees.
